Garden maintenance may have taken a bit of a back seat as the weather has grown colder, but planning ahead and dreaming big for spring is a must. Landscaping is a great way to revamp outdoor spaces for improved use and enhanced aesthetic appeal. But, did you know that there are two specific types of landscaping to explore? Read on to discover more and prepare to create the garden of your dreams for 2024…

What is hard landscaping?

Hard landscaping refers to the ‘hard’ components of your garden’s design. These include anything that helps you to shape the layout of your outdoor space or define its structure. Things like patios, paths, fencing, decking and walls all count, and in most circumstances, they’re considered permanent features of your garden scheme.

What about soft landscaping?

In comparison, soft landscaping relates to any additions that enable you to fill out and soften up the hard structures incorporated earlier. Flowers, grass, shrubs, soil and mulch are all elements added during soft landscaping, and they’re maintained and nurtured from season to season for optimum appeal.

I have a small garden, can I hard landscape?

Hard landscaping looks great in any space, including those that are small in size. Space restrictions after all don’t have to hamper your creativity.

Wooden pergolas can be used to add interest and height to smaller gardens to elevate your space from the ground up and frame any beautiful views or garden features. Fences can also be used to dress plainer walls and outbuildings, with climbing plants able to be incorporated later to beautify your space further.

Decked areas and patios could replace traditional lawns in small gardens to create low-maintenance spaces for entertaining guests and whiling away those warmer days.

How can larger gardens be transformed with hard landscaping?

Hard landscaping can be used well in larger gardens too, creating smaller and more intimate zones that are welcoming spaces whatever the season. With hard landscaping, you can give sprawling gardens more purpose, creating a destination in every area. Don’t forget to use paths to link your zones and make every part of your garden more accessible.

Can hard landscaping be used in my front garden?

Hard landscaping can be used to define front gardens too. From the addition of a stylish path and a conveniently placed driveway to a beautiful new fence and decked or tiled entrance, anything goes!
