While the improving weather will offer much of the ingredients you need for success when it comes to your garden plant life, giving them a helping hand won’t hurt. At this time of year, feeding is an essential task, especially for those looking to grow their own fruits, vegetables and herbs. Container and bedding plants will also benefit from a dose of fertiliser on a regular basis.
Liquid feed is the best choice for containers, including hanging baskets. You should do your research when feeding those fruits and veggies though. Different varieties generally need different types of fertiliser. Peppers, aubergines and tomatoes for instance will thrive with a high potassium feed. The same feed can also be used to nourish flowering perennials and shrubs.
Keeping on top of watering is a must during summer. Try to use water wisely in your garden, reusing water from cooking or rainwater before reaching for the fresh stuff from the tap.
Never water your plants in the middle of the day. Any water will quickly evaporate leaving plants with very little nourishment. Water your garden first thing in the morning or during the evening for the best results.
Whether dead heading prized blooms to keep your borders flourishing or getting rid of those weeds that seem to be constantly sprouting from your patio, you’ll spend a lot of time pruning over the summer months.
Timing feeding and pruning just right is the key to getting multiple flushes of flowers from the same plants. That’s why we’d recommend feeding plants like delphiniums and geraniums after the first flowers to encourage a second flush.
